How the school operates
Brooklyn Montessori is an English-medium independent school in Brooklyn, Pretoria, registered with the Department of Education. South African and international children are welcome.
The classes run from the Toddler Community to Grade 7. There is no high school here. Children finish Grade 7 and go on to mainstream high schools.
The classes

12 months to 3 years
Toddler Community
Walking, pouring, dressing, speaking. Separation is handled over weeks if a child needs it, and toilet training is supported.

3 to 6 years
Children’s House
Three years in one room, Grade R included. Practical life, phonics and early mathematics. Reading usually arrives earlier than parents expect.

Grades 1 to 3
Foundation Phase
Language, mathematics, geometry, geography and biology, with the materials before the pencils.

Grades 4 to 6
Intermediate Phase
Research, written work and individual work plans. Robotics continues.

Grade 7
Preparation year
Built for the move to high school: formal assessment practice, study habits and application guidance.
Each environment holds three year groups together. Children move up when they are ready for the next one, not on a date.
A day here
Children of four and older should be here by 08:00 to get the full benefit of the Montessori morning. Aftercare is charged separately, and the latest collection is 17:00.
What the fees cover
- French, taught by a specialist and timetabled like any other work.
- Robotics, inside the timetable rather than billed as an extramural.
- Stationery, covered by one fee a year, so parents do not buy it themselves.
- Aftercare, from 13:30 to 17:00 on school days.
- Lunch, served at 13:00 for the children who take it.
- Soccer, ballet and swimming, run by outside providers and away from the school premises. Each carries its own cost.
Music is taught at the school. Ask the office whether it sits inside the fees.
Meals
Breakfast from home
The school does not serve breakfast. Send it with your child.
Snack at 10:00
Brought from home and eaten together. In the pre-school it is healthy food only: no crisps and no sweets.
Lunch at 13:00
Available at a fee. Ask the office what it costs and how to sign up.
Availability, tours and the calendar
Start at any time
The school takes enrolments all year, whenever there is space. There is no single intake date to wait for.
Space is very limited
Places are few. Ask the office what is open in the phase you need before you plan around a start date.
Tours by appointment
The premises are toured by appointment only. Arrange one with the office and come while the children are working.
A four term calendar
The school follows the independent schools calendar, which runs slightly differently to the public one. Ask the office for this year’s dates.
Holidays
Only the pre-school is open during the school holidays.
After Grade 7
There is no high school here. Children finish Grade 7 and go on to mainstream high schools.
Enrol
Applications are made online, on the school’s own form. It takes a few minutes and the office comes back to you.
